A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
