Each time a significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
